Education

Adult Education is directed by Priest Associate, the Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas.
Youth Education is directed by Priest Associate, the Rev. Anne M. Turner.

We seek to:
*engage the mind and the soul
*use reason and critical thinking
*experience holiness in music and art

We are developing an integrated program of education and spiritual formation for all ages. Our model for education is catechesis -- the whole process of formation in the Word in the context of sacramental community.

Liturgy in the Round

Young Children

Our Nursery is for children up to age three. We meet in the Parish Hall from 9:15 am until the end of the 10:30 service.

Our Playroom is for 3-6 year olds. We gather in the Parker Room from 9:15 a.m. until after the 10:30 service. Babysitters offer crafts, songs, fun and prayers.

Sunday School classes meet 9:15-10:15 Sunday morning. Students and teachers also have regular sessions with liturgical arts instructors in our Parke House studio. We create collages, water colors, mosaics, murals, and icons.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Please contact Vestry Member, Louise Lavine for more information on the Atrium

Children (3-6 yrs. old) at Grace Church are invited to attend the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This Montessori-based program is built upon the belief that this age group relates to God in a simple and trusting manner. They understand Jesus as the Good Shepherd and themselves as his sheep. The motto of the Catechesis is:
“Help me fall in love with God by myself.”

Our environment is called the Atrium, after the area in the basilica where worshipers prepare hearts and minds for the liturgy. The Atrium is serene and organized for children to work with hands-on materials relating to the parables and liturgical action. For example, in the Atrium there is a model altar with items for Eucharist, figures of the Good Shepherd and sheep, vestments, and a prayer table. Adults in the Atrium serve as catechists to help children approach and connect to God. They beautify the Atrium with flowers and art. The catechists do not “teach” so much as “announce” the Good News. Visit the National Association of the Catechesis of the good shepherd.for more information.

Confirmation

At Grace , youth confirmands make their commitment to Christianity and the Episcopal church after extensive preparation. Questions about Confirmation should be asked of the Rector, who works directly and joyfully with our youth.

Adult mentors meet with confirmands on Sunday mornings or during the week. Sessions are modeled on the program: journey to adulthood.

Confirmed youth and Vestry are invited to attend adult classes.
