The Pastoral Care Commission seeks to further the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in our parish family, by offering prayer and support to members of Grace Church who are sick, injured, disabled, aged, and those who find themselves in crisis or in challenging transitions.
We are creating, with God’s help, small, neighborhood groups which we are calling “Pastorates.” These groups will meet monthly to consider Scripture, to pray, and to share life’s joys and concerns. A pastorate is a body of pastors. It is hoped these groups will encourage us further to minister to one another as Christ would have us do.
Last month two pilot Pastorates met for the first time, one in Pelham and one in South Amherst. Each group was comprised of twelve or so parishioners. Rob met with the group in Pelham and I had the privilege of meeting with the South Amherst group.
On the occasion of our first meeting, both groups celebrated a home Eucharist which included prayerful collective consideration of the Gospel lesson. And, both groups reported that the meetings were gratifying, and dates were made for second meetings in March.
At this point we are encouraging the formation of other Pastorates. You will find in the Connector during the month of March, a map of Amherst and the surrounding communities posted on the bulletin board. You are invited to find your Pastorate on the map and indicate your interest to participate by placing a star sticker on the map at the place which represents your residence, and by signing the nearby sheet with your name, address and phone number.
Also, this year’s Vestry Retreat scheduled for Saturday, March 11 is opened to all parishioners as a “Pastorate Workshop.” The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. with lunch provided by our Senior Warden, Jane Wald. The morning will be given to a demonstration and discussion of the format envisioned for our monthly gatherings.
I am excited to be a part of this new thing happening at Grace. As the bonds of authentic Christian friendship are strengthened, so is the Body of Christ. Let us all accept with joy the invitation to participate in this strengthening.
